School Health Nurse

ensuring students are healthy, in school, and ready to learn

School health services are intended to minimize health barriers to learning for public school students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

Health Services

The Florida Department of Health in Putnam County (DOH-Putnam) partners with the Putnam County School District (PCSD) to attain quality health services in our schools. This includes oversight and assistance for services such as health screening (hearing, vision, scoliosis and height/weight measurements), health room audits, immunization compliance, school physical compliance, communicable disease support, writing care plans for charter schools, and assisting with training school health personnel. Prevention, intervention and emergency school-based services are provided daily to children attending our public and charter schools. This includes preventive dental services for elementary students. Health education is interlaced in services provided.

Health Room Oversight

DOH-Putnam’s School Health Program is committed to appraise, protect and promote the health of our children applying the student-centered School Health framework Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC)  Parental and community involvement is essential for children to grow up with a healthy body, mind and spirit. We provide health room oversight through dedication and working collaboratively with the PCSD health team. Together we connect health and academics to  improve each child’s wellbeing through health and education, helping them to positively integrate into society.

School-Based Clinics

Each school’s health room has a trained health aide who works closely with the school district’s RNs and/or the DOH-Putnam School Health Program RN. This assists the health room aide in providing care to students with diagnosed or suspected health problems to administer medications, health procedures, first aid services, emergency care and health counseling referrals. Health room personnel work closely with students who have special needs such as asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy. Care plans are developed by RNs for children with pertinent health conditions to promote quality care to these students during the school day.
